ChatGPT Ads VS Google Ads: Which Is Better?

25th Sep 2026 / By Steph Caldecott

ChatGPT has become a real challenger to traditional search engines like Google, with research from OpenAI suggesting that ChatGPT receives a total of 2.5 billion daily prompts.

And since early 2026, ChatGPT has been trialling in-platform advertising – removing even more friction from the buyer journey by evolving into a platform that serves the entire customer funnel. With AI becoming an active co-pilot in how consumers discover, research, and purchase products, it’s time for brands to evaluate which platform delivers the best return on investment.

We compared the newest ad platform (ChatGPT), to arguably the most established (Google), to see who comes out on top.

ChatGPT VS Google Ads: The Face-Off

Intent

Takeaway: The better performer here completely depends on the primary goal of your campaign.

Google Ads excel at capturing explicit, immediate purchase intent. When a user types “buy North Face coat sale” into Google, they have a credit card in hand and a clear path to purchase. For high-volume seasonal peaks like Black Friday, where speed, direct response, and capturing ready-to-buy shoppers are paramount, Google Ads remains the safer, more proven bet.

ChatGPT, on the other hand, captures discovery intent. Users turn to ChatGPT to solve problems or compare options – for example, asking “What’s the best winter jacket for a wet, windy trip to Scotland under £200?” While the user may not be ready to checkout in thirty seconds, ChatGPT puts your brand directly into the initial consideration set while they are actively making their decision.

Keywords

Takeaway: Neither platform wins – it’s a draw.

Comparing keywords on Google Ads to prompts on ChatGPT is like comparing apples to oranges; they serve fundamentally different mechanics:

  • Google Ads relies on exact, phrase, and broad-match keywords to match explicit search terms. It is a mature keyword auction market where you bid directly on specific search phrases.
  • ChatGPT Ads operates on contextual hints, themes, and prompt topics rather than hyper-specific keyword bidding.

Because both approaches target high-value user queries – one through precise keyword matching and the other through natural language context – neither platform takes a direct win here. They simply require different optimisation strategies.

Targeting

Takeaway: ChatGPT wins.

In theory, conversational AI unlocks a depth of targeting data that traditional keyword search simply cannot match. A single Google search query gives you a handful of words. A ChatGPT conversation gives you rich contextual history, nuances, constraints, preferences, and dialogue.

Because ChatGPT understands the user’s broader situation (e.g., their budget, personal preferences, and specific pain points revealed throughout a conversation), sponsored placements can be served with hyper-relevant context. This creates an opportunity for conversational ads and sponsored interactions that feel like tailor-made recommendations rather than disruptive banners.

Trust

Takeaway: It’s difficult to fairly determine, as Google Ads is a well-established industry standard, while ChatGPT Ads are still new.

Google Ads has spent over two decades building trust with advertisers through robust reporting, fraud detection, and reliable conversion attribution. Consumers also generally understand the distinction between sponsored search results and organic listings on Google.

With ChatGPT Ads, trust is a two-sided coin:

  1. Consumer Trust: OpenAI maintains a strict wall between organic AI answers and sponsored placements to preserve response neutrality. However, user perception is still forming as ad placements expand.
  2. Advertiser Trust: Marketers are still navigating new attribution models, contextual placement algorithms, and reporting dashboards that lack the historical data depth of Google.

Benchmarking

Takeaway: Google Ads takes the win on maturity, but ChatGPT offers early-adopter leverage.

Because Google Ads has been the cornerstone of PPC for decades, marketers benefit from clear industry benchmarks: average cost-per-click (CPC), standard conversion rates, customer acquisition costs (CAC), and predictable return on ad spend (ROAS) across almost every niche.

ChatGPT Ads currently lacks standardised global benchmarks. While pricing models range from impression-based CPMs to cost-per-click and sponsored conversation engagements, performance varies significantly by vertical. The trade-off is clear: Google offers predictable, scalable benchmarking, while ChatGPT offers early-adopter access to an engaged, low-friction audience before the ad auction becomes saturated.

Final Thoughts: ChatGPT VS Google

At the risk of being overly unbiased, there is no definitive answer as to whether ChatGPT or Google Ads is the ‘better’ platform – there’s no one-size-fits-all.

Right now, we recommend that brands already running successful Google Ads campaigns allocate some budget to test ChatGPT Ads – particularly for product discovery and high-consideration purchases. Conversely, businesses just getting started with PPC should stick to more traditional platforms like Google Ads to begin with. Not because ChatGPT can’t work, but because Google offers a deeply established infrastructure, proven conversion pathways, and extensive data to guide early strategy.

It’s crucial for brands to remember that ChatGPT Ads and Google Ads are fundamentally different channels. Copying and pasting your Google Search keyword strategy into ChatGPT will not work. Every platform demands its own dedicated strategy tailored to how users interact with it – without one, you’re simply throwing money at the wall and hoping it sticks.
