What is PPC Reporting?

Being able to view and measure these metrics provides in-depth insights into campaign and audience demographics, and in turn identify what’s working well alongside potential risks. This information can then help businesses with account optimisation and strategy to reach the right audience more effectively, allowing a higher ROI and revenue.

What’s in a PPC Report?

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to PPC reporting, but reports should always be clear, concise, easy-to-use, and of course, include the specific metrics that help you to define success.

Detail is great, however too much detail can also be overwhelming and take away from the core purpose of a report – which is to provide easily accessible data that can be analysed to deliver insights.

If a report is extremely detailed, it’s important to not only focus on the data, but also on providing clear visuals to make the information as digestible and easy to read as possible. For example, in tables, colour coding or using a heat map to define success for certain metrics can help the reader to quickly identify areas that are doing well. These areas can include products, location, dates/times, and seasonality.

Another way that I’ve found ensures a report isn’t ‘too much’ is by developing a comparison tool that allows the selection of specific years, months, and metrics, which narrows down data to specific requests rather than displaying all data at once.

Weekly and daily data is excluded from this tool as it is far too granular. The only exception I would expect here is to view ‘celebrated’ days that generally impact an industry, such as Mothers Day, Christmas, and Black Friday – all that are related to a surge in conversions and revenue for many industries.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that the data is relevant, clear, and delivers what the associated business needs to efficiently identify what does and doesn’t work for them.

PPC Reporting: Dos and Don’ts

As someone who spends every day creating, editing, and reading reports, I’ve come to collect a few personal rules that I stick to when working on a report to ensure that it’s the best it can be, whilst also making sure the process isn’t unnecessarily time-consuming:

Dos:

  • Do ask the right questions: when building a report there are number of questions that you’ll need to ask those that you’re working with, and yourself. What KPIs are being measured? How granular do dates need to be? How often will the report be used, and by how many people? What is the purpose of the report? How can the data be best presented?
  • Do stay relevant: is the data relevant to the end goal? Or is the data something that the business wants to see? If the answer is no to both of those questions, then it’s not data that you need to include.
  • Do communicate: whether you’re working in-house or with a client, clear, regular communication is essential between you and those you’re working with. Don’t be scared to ask questions and remember, everyone is working towards the same goal, so clarifying what’s expected from you and from the report will only help you work more confidently and efficiently.

Don’ts:

  • Don’t set expectations too high: it can be hard to say no to a report request, however as the expert, you know what’s best and what works. Setting realistic expectations from the very beginning can be a great to avoid any upset when having to turn down a request.
  • Don’t forget to take a step back: report building can be really time consuming, and also really intense. Sometimes, taking a step back can help you to more quickly solve a challenge you’re facing, or at least approach it in a different way. When I’m faced with a problem, I take a step back and ask myself: is this achievable? Is this relevant? Is there an alternative? Is this too complex? Will this solve the problem?
  • Don’t create more work for yourself: the time, effort, and brain power that goes into creating a report is huge, so try not to create extra work for yourself if it’s not necessary. Having report templates to work from can be hugely helpful, and even though they might need editing to suit the exact needs of different businesses, not having to start from scratch makes all the difference.
